Winter Fells Run

Winter Fells Run is a unique, hill-climbing competition.  Participants have two ways to approach the challenge:
  1. Complete the competitive full course challenge at once, which equates to 12 miles with five, distinct hill-climb segments. Runners in this category are "Winter Fells Trekkers." The "Trekkers" have one shot per week to tackle this course. The Challenge timeframe is two weeks, so that's one shot per week,  two attempts in total.
  2. Hit all five hill-climb segments separately; opt out of the 12-mile course. Runners in this category are "Winter Fells Day Trippers." The "Trippers" can hit the segments as many times as they wish during the two-week Challenge. Note: to be considered for scoring, you must complete all five segments in the two-week Challenge window.

Registration: Strava will be used to track and manage the challenge. If you wish to have your effort(s) scored among the other participants, please log into Strava and join the respective Challenge Club by clicking here:

Timeframe:  The event starts on Jan 11 and ends on Jan 24. Trekker completion is divided into two, 1-week categories. Stay tuned for more info!

Frequently Asked Question's
Q: If I don't use Strava, can I still participate?
A: Sure!  You are encouraged to hit the course and the hills. Your times will simply not be included in the "contest" portion.

Q: Can I compete in both categories? (e.g. run the 12 miles for a course rating and then on another day hit the segments piece meal?)
A:  No! For competition tracking purposes, we ask that Trekkers only run the 5  hill segments when attempting to complete the competition during that given week. Day Trippers can hit segments as often as they like though.

Q: What if I hit a segment but Strava doesn't record? Or records inaccurately?
A: We've all been burned before. It's frustrating. By participating in this challenge, one must accept the inherent risk of a botched Garmin or Strava session. Please avoid whining. Run. It. Again.

Q: Can kids compete?
A: Nah. This Challenge is meant for adults.

Q: What about COVID? How can this be safe?
A:  We encourage folks to run solo (or at a six foot distance from others) Please do not participate if you deem this activity to be unsafe or not in accordance with your personal safety standards.

Q: Can I run the 12-mile course multiple times in one week? What if I exceed the "one-a-week" rule?
A:  All of your results will be stricken from the leaderboard rankings.

Q: What if one or more of my segment timeframes fails to register when I run during the 12-mile course?
A: The posted segments will be ranked accordingly. The overall score, however, will be impacted due to the missing segments.

Q: What happens if there is a tie in the overall Trekker score?
A: Tie-breaker is position on leaderboards for each segment in length order (longest to shortest) until the tie is broken.

Scoring details

Trekkers:

The 6 scored segments (5 hills and 1 overall) will have posted to the leaderboard with KOM / QOM props for each segment. In addition, an overall competition score will be tallied using the respective leaderboards as follows:
1st place = 10 pts.
2nd place = 9 pts.
3rd place = 8 pts.
4th place = 7 pts.
5tth place = 6 pts
6th place = 5 pts.
7th place = 4 pts.
8th place = 3 pts.
9th place = 2 pts.
9th> place = 1 pt.

As an example, if a competitor earns 1st place on every segment, they will have a score of 60 pts.
